We are seeking a dedicated Volunteer Nonprofit Attorney or Legal Advisor to support the legal needs of Women of Purpose United. In this role, you will help ensure our organization’s compliance with legal requirements, safeguard its interests, and provide guidance on matters critical to our mission of empowering women entrepreneurs
Key Responsibilities
- Formation Support: Review and verify the accuracy of articles of incorporation, state registration filings, and tax-exempt status applications.
- Compliance Oversight: Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, including tax laws, governance requirements, and reporting obligations.
- Intellectual Property Protection: Safeguard the organization’s intellectual property, including trademarks, copyrights, and branding.
- Contract Review: Draft, review, and negotiate contracts with donors, vendors, and partners to protect WOPU’s interests.
- Fundraising Guidance: Advise on legal compliance for fundraising activities, including solicitation requirements and donor agreements.
- Employment Matters: Provide guidance on employee and volunteer contracts, wage and hour compliance, and workplace policies.
- Risk Mitigation: Identify potential legal risks and develop strategies to minimize them
Qualifications & Skills
- Commitment to WOPU’s mission and passion for empowering minority women entrepreneurs.
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active bar membership in the U.S.
- Experience in nonprofit law, tax-exempt organizations, or related legal fields.
- Strong knowledge of federal and state compliance requirements for nonprofits.
- Excellent analytical and communication skills.
- Ability to provide clear and actionable legal advice tailored to the unique needs of nonprofits.
- Familiarity with intellectual property and contract law is a plus
