Brand new ham, but you've never talked on the radio?
Don't have a license, but want to know what it's all about?
Everyone is invited to this combined training/open house for amateur radio (also known as "ham"). An amateur radio license is not required for this event, and non-hams are encouraged to attend.
During this event, you will:
- Learn about amateur radio, its brief history, license types, and more
- Learn the basics of operating and talking (a.k.a. "how do I say hello?")
- Practice on different radio equipment (even non-licensed people can talk on the radio!)
- Pick up some new radio jargon and terms
- Meet the amateurs in Collin County that support Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES), which are the folks doing storm spotting during severe weather
- If you'd like to get your amateur radio license, we'll point you in the direction of the nearest testing event (sorry, no licensing exams will be given during our Ham 101 event)
