What We Do

County Adult Literacy Council is a fully volunteer-staffed, 501c3 nonprofit organization that exists to serve the literacy needs of adults living in the county or can reach services in it.

The illiteracy rate in Collin County is approximately 8%; 18% of residents do not speak English at home and 13% are foreign-born. Our affiliate literacy and English as a Second Language  (ESL) providers are working diligently to help our students learn to read, write, and speak English, as well as pass the GED test. We also have programs that provide basic adult education. We do this through volunteer efforts in classrooms, small groups, and one-to-one tutoring sessions.

CCALC has it's own one-to-one tutoring program for those adults who need to improve their reading, writing, and math skills.  This is at no cost to the learner with the exception of the cost of their book.  There is a scholarship fund for those who cannot afford the book.

Our volunteers give thousands of hours of their time each year, serving an average of 200 students at each affiliate site.

Even this tremendous effort does not reflect the demand, however, since a great number are put on waiting lists every year.

Mission Statement:

The Collin County Adult Literacy Council (CCALC) is a non-profit, 501 c3, non-sectarian, non-religious, non-political organization whose purpose is to serve the literacy needs of adults who live in Collin County, or who have access to services provided in Collin County.
