Join us in assembling hygiene kits at our storage facility this Make a Difference Day!

We will be making hygiene kits that our team will hand out to our unhoused neighbors at different locations across North Texas. This project is a simple assembly line where you will be add hygiene items to a quart size bag.

All items will be provided, we just need some willing hands to help package the kits! This is a great opportunity for families with young children.

How to Roll Socks.

Supplies you will need: socks, rubber bands, and scissors

Take the socks out of the store packing Cut off any plastic tabs that are holding the pairs together Roll each pair from the toe up to the calf Wrap the pair with a rubber band 2 times or until secure Separate the socks into 3 categories
- Men's black crew and ankle socks
- Men's white crew and ankle socks
- Women's crew and ankle socks
   *Please do not roll any children's socks

Clothing

Clothes can be new or used in good condition. 

We need winter items from Oct - March (gloves, hats, scarves, coats, and blankets).

Also, we need belts and shoes for both men and women. 

Lastly, we need men's pants, shorts and shirts. We are well stocked with women's clothes. 

DROP-OFF LOCATION

Donated items can be dropped off at any shower location.

Streetside Showers is a nonprofit organization that provides free mobile showers, hygiene kits, and clean undergarments to people experiencing homelessness in North Texas.  Streetside Showers' mission is to help restore human dignity to the homeless community. The organization's founder, Lance Olinski, was inspired to start Streetside Showers after seeing a homeless man washing out of a public restroom in McKinney, TX.   
Streetside Showers parks temporary showers in strategic locations, including McKinney, Irving, and Plano. The organization also makes free showers available three to four times per week in the Dallas Metroplex.   

In Mckinney an estimated 250-500 persons are experiencing homelessness. In Collin County:

19% are under 18 yrs old

14% are over 55 yrs old

Youth Homelessness increased 18%

Family Homelessness increased 15%

How to Launder Towels

Washing towels is a commitment to come to our storage, pick up towels and take them home or to the laundromat to wash. Once they are clean, you would then fold them, put them in a white trash bag, and return them to our storage. Each pick up, you would take about 3 trash bags full of towels.

We provide laundry detergent, laundry sanitizer and white trash bags for the clean towels.

You would pick the towels up and drop them off at a storage unit in McKinney.

You can have one volunteer who does it each pick up or a group and just rotate each pick up.

We have opportunities for weekly, every other week or standby towel volunteers.

Inside a quart size Ziploc (or off brand) bag, put the following 8 items:

Toothbrush
Soft only. If you have to take the toothbrush out of the store packaging because it does not fit in the kit or it came in a multi-pack, please use gloves and put it in its own sandwich bag. Do not put anything else inside the bag with the toothbrush. Toothpaste Shampoo* Conditioner* Bar soap* or body wash* Lotion* Razor Q-tips
Either use a pre-packaged travel kit of Q-tips OR use gloves and take 10-15 Q-tips out of a large pack and
put them in a snack size bag. Then, put this bag inside the kit.
