Description:

Creating Hope Bags is a simple and powerful way to bring dignity and encouragement to our housing-challenged neighbors. Each bag contains everyday essentials like hygiene items, socks, snacks, and encouraging notes. Volunteers can either assemble complete bags or donate items for us to include.

Suggested Items for Hope Bags:

• Toothbrush & toothpaste

• Deodorant

• Soap or body wipes

• Socks

• Granola bars or shelf-stable snacks

• Bottled water

• Travel-size shampoo or lotion

• A handwritten encouragement note ❤️

Please avoid unsealed liquids unless they are securely packaged.

How to Help:

• Collect items with your school, workplace, or community group.

Financial Literacy Instrictor

R&R Ministries is seeking an experienced and passionate volunteer to join our Job Preparedness Team in delivering financial literacy to individuals reentering the workforce. In this role, you’ll collaborate closely with our Community Engagement Coordinator to identify essential financial concepts, such as budgeting, saving, managing debt, and understanding credit, and create engaging, easy-to-understand lesson plans tailored to our clients' needs. Strong communication skills are key, as you'll be helping clients gain confidence in managing their personal finances. Responsibilities include: Identifying relevant financial topics for workforce reentry and developing clear, accessible lesson plans and materials. Delivering financial education sessions in a supportive, empowering manner. Communicating effectively and compassionately with a diverse client base.

R&R Ministries seeks an experienced volunteer to join our community engagement team, establishing and maintaining external partner relations organization-wide in accordance with R&R Ministries standards. Under the supervision of the Community Engagement Coordinator, the Community Engagement Assistant will work closely with organizational leadership to identify, manage, and build partnerships and relationships with peer organizations, government entities, officials, donors, and volunteers.

We do request that anyone who signs up in this role is a licensed barber/hairstylist. Each volunteer barber/hairstylist will need to supply their own equipment and tools for providing haircuts. You will be managing Streetside Closet. This is a 17ft U-Haul that has been converted into a walk-in closet. When a guest comes looking for clothes, you will help them find what they need. Between guests, you will be restocking the clothing truck.

Put several snack items in a quart size Ziploc (or off brand) bag. Please do not use a paper bag. The following page has suggested items for these food packs.

Part of our shower service includes giving our guests fresh clean underwear.  We collect MENS BOXER BRIEFS all sizes and WOMENS COTTON BIKINIS all sizes.

Clothes can be new or used in good condition. 

We need winter items from Oct - March (gloves, hats, scarves, coats, and blankets).

Also, we need belts and shoes for both men and women. 

Lastly, we need men's pants, shorts and shirts. We are well stocked with women's clothes. 

Donated items can be dropped off at any shower location. 

Washing towels is a commitment to come to our storage, pick up towels and take them home or to the laundromat to wash. Once they are clean, you would then fold them, put them in a white trash bag, and return them to our storage. Each pick up, you would take about 3 trash bags full of towels.

We provide laundry detergent, laundry sanitizer and white trash bags for the clean towels.

You would pick the towels up and drop them off at a storage unit in McKinney.

You can have one volunteer who does it each pick up or a group and just rotate each pick up.

We have opportunities for weekly, every other week or standby towel volunteers.

Do you enjoy setting up and serving at parties? We have Tea and Tours for groups here at Chestnut Square. We serve lunch in our historic homes and a tour of the historic homes follows the lunch. If you like to serve and work with people in the community, come join us.

We are looking for volunteers that can be on their feet for a few hours cleaning dishes and serving our guests. Must have comfortable close toed shoes.

Tea & Tours can be scheduled on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, or Saturdays between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, depending on the event.

Regular maintenance of our grounds include removing branches, weeding, raking and sweeping. General cleaning of the interior of the buildings usually involves dusting, mopping and sweeping sidewalks. Do you love history? Do you wish to keep it alive? Do you like storytelling? Come join us and tell about the oldest house in McKinney, share the history of Collin County and McKinney through our weekly and scheduled guided tours.

Volunteer to be a Docent (tour guide) to lead tours of the Historic Home Museums on Thursdays and/or Saturdays at 11:00 am. Learn the stories of the families that lived in the historic homes and pass on their history to visitor's that come to take a tour. No experience is required. Docents receive full training, including a docent manual with the history of the families that lived in the homes, tours with experienced docents and mock tours with the Chestnut Square Tour Manager.

Requirements:

Village Tours are on Thursday and Saturday from 10:45 am to 12:15 pm and Friday from 12:45pm-2:45pm.

As our cat supply coordinator, your duties will include picking up dirty bedding, bowls and litter boxes, taking home for washing, then returning the clean items to the store. This is a vital role for our organization.

Be part of a life-changing outreach experience! Every Friday, rain or shine, join our team at Metro Relief’s headquarters in The Colony to serve individuals experiencing homelessness. Our custom outreach bus – half food truck, half passenger van – takes up to 15 volunteers directly to local homeless encampments to distribute hot soup, bottled water, hygiene kits, and clothing.

The day begins at 8:30 AM with a warm welcome and orientation at our home base. You’ll help prepare our nutritious homemade soup, sort essential supplies, and load the bus for departure around 9:45 AM. Throughout the day, you’ll not only provide much-needed items, but also build human connections – sharing stories, listening with empathy, and offering hope.

We return to the Metro Relief base by 1:30 PM, where we wrap up with clean-up and debrief, finishing the experience by 2:00 PM.

This is more than just a volunteer opportunity – it’s a chance to make a real impact in someone’s life and be reminded of the power of kindness and connection.

Keeping clean can be very difficult on the streets. When a man or lady is able to keep clean, this can give them that extra bit of positivity they need to get through the day, and it can help them present themselves well for a job interview. Mini-hygiene kits are a great way to help care for the less fortunate. 

A) Assemble full kits

B) Donate whatever hygiene-related items you may have or buy. Feel free to give other items than those we have listed. We have found the ones listed are the most needed items.

To assemble a mini-hygiene kit just put the items in a half-gallon-sized zip-lock (or off-brand) bag. If the items fit in a smaller bag that is fine too.

Feel free to add more items, but avoid liquids unless sealed very well.

We are in the streets daily, so we go through bags quickly. Please know any amount helps us care for the less fortunate in our community.

The HSF coaching program is the main differentiator between HSF and other scholarship organizations. One-to-one coaching is a significant contributor to a student’s academic success.

Students are each assigned a Coach to mentor them throughout the college journey. Coaches help their student monitor progress with their degree plan and stay on track to meet the Hendrick program requirements. They also provide direction with important decisions regarding other aspects of their student’s life and help guide students to learn to manage their time, set priorities, and develop good study habits. A coach is an advocate and a supportive resource, providing encouragement and helping the student stay focused on his or her goals.

The Networking Assistant volunteer position primarily involves database entry. However, if the volunteer has excellent communication skills, they may also make phone calls or represent the agency within the community. The databases the volunteer will access contain the agency’s contacts for various events, projects, and marketing efforts. These databases are housed on our Google server, allowing access and viewing by any staff member as needed.

The Networking Assistant position can be performed remotely. Weekly deadlines will need to be met, and a phone meeting will take place each week between UTH staff and the volunteer. At least 5 hours per week are expected for this position, with a minimum commitment of 2 months.

This group began meeting in June of 2024. Every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month, Trinity Presbyterian Church of McKinney hosts a "plarn workshop". Plarn stands for plastic yarn (which is made from plastic grocery bags). We're a mix of church members and community members and it's a lot of fun! Together, we socialize for a couple of hours while flattening bags, cutting strips and looping the strips together into a ball of plarn, which then gets crocheted into a sleeping mat. We are in need of more people who know how to crochet, and we will teach you how to work with the plarn. We're thrilled with any and all helpers who want to come and be part of the group and help with any of the above tasks which means you don't have to crochet if that's not your strong suit!

We meet from about 9:30am to 12pm in a classroom that is located closest to the west side parking lot of our building so it's recommended to park on the west side and enter through the doors with steps and a ramp leading to them. You can always come later or leave earlier as your schedule permits, this is a very easygoing and fun group.

The completed sleeping mats are distributed through Streetside Showers in McKinney to be given to the homeless, and we would love to be able to increase our output as the need for these mats also increases. Dallas House:

Early Bird Volunteers
(7 am to 9 am, 7 days a week)

Early Bird Volunteers will work with the Operations Staff to help open up the House each morning and will be responsible for the following tasks:

-Answer the telephone and assist with front desk duties.

-Assist with setting out continental breakfast and breakfast clean-up

-Drive House guests to their early morning doctor’s appointments.

Pleas note: All individual volunteers must be 18 years of age or older, and must undergo a criminal and motor vehicle background check.

Our beds have arrived! We are looking for assistance with putting together 9 beds, they do not require tools! The beds do need 2 or 3 people to put them together, but are easy head board, foot board and the single frame that hook together. 

We also have a dining room table which will require a drill or screw driver to put the legs on. This will require 2 or 3 people.

This event takes place on the second Saturday of every month. It is a friendly family food drive where we provide food and other essential items to 250 or more families. Please feel free to use this Signup Genius to volunteer for the event. Be sure to note the dates and times you select.

All McKinney ISD volunteers are required to complete the online McKinney ISD volunteer application. When filling out the volunteer application please make sure to select “REACH” for your volunteer position. This process includes a background check. Once approved, a one-hour mentor orientation training is required. REACH is a school-based program; therefore, all mentoring takes place at the student’s campus, once a week, during a time that has been set up by the Campus Liaison and the mentor.

Started in 2006, the REACH program is designed to foster a basic sense of self-esteem, self-confidence, and motivation to learn and improve personal and social skills that will reinforce the importance of an education. The primary mission of the program is to reach one child at a time.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace is hosting a bedding drive! Our organization builds hand-made beds for children in the community who don't have one, and who often sleep on the floor in their home. The primary obstacle between a Build Day and delivery is the need for bedding.

You can bring new twin-sized bedding to our physical address, or use one of our wish lists to participate in the bedding drive digitally. No matter how you choose to participate, we're so grateful for your support of the children in our community!

Hugs Cafe is in need of job coaches to work with our staff with intellectual and developmental disabilities at the cafe. Duties involve shadowing the employee while they perform their job at the cafe and assisting in light kitchen prep work.

The room readiness team will be in charge of preparing rooms for new residents. Each room will need to be deep cleaned from the previous resident, as well as redecorated. We would love for each resident to move into new bedding as they begin their fresh start.  This is a great group project.

Celebration team members will plan and facilitate various celebrations for residents throughout the year. This consists, but is not limited to, birthdays, school graduations, and program graduations. An example of a birthday celebration would consist of bringing a card/gift and cake to a class night to celebrate that resident’s birthday. 

Purpose

At Jim Riley Outreach (JRO), we firmly believe that mentors are a key component to the success of our residents. There are multiple studies that show the importance of this relationship. We see our mentors as the main way to connect our residents with members of the community. These connections will become a support system to help our young women and men grow and sustain them both now and in the future.

Expectations

As a faith-based program, we do ask that our mentors have a strong faith. We also ask that our mentors commit to their mentee for the full length that he/she is in the program, up to two years. The monthly expectations of mentors are to connect with their mentees for a total of six hours a month. The time commitment encompasses the twice a month ‘Mentor Nights” on Tuesday nights, as well as other calls/texts throughout the month. We want our mentors to establish trust, maintain confidentiality, and provide guidance and encouragement, as well as share personal experiences and perspectives with their mentees. Our hope is that our mentors are with our young adults for life. The goal would be that your mentee would be invited in to be a part of your family life: that these relationships remain a support system to them long after their time here.

Purpose

At Jim Riley Outreach (JRO), we firmly believe that mentors are a key component to the success of our residents. There are multiple studies that show the importance of this relationship. We see our mentors as the main way to connect our residents with members of the community. These connections will become a support system to help our young women and men grow and sustain them both now and in the future.

Expectations

As a faith-based program, we do ask that our mentors have a strong faith. We also ask that our mentors commit to their mentee for the full length that he/she is in the program, up to two years. The monthly expectations of mentors are to connect with their mentees for a total of six hours a month. The time commitment encompasses the twice a month ‘Mentor Nights” on Tuesday nights, as well as other calls/texts throughout the month. We want our mentors to establish trust, maintain confidentiality, and provide guidance and encouragement, as well as share personal experiences and perspectives with their mentees. Our hope is that our mentors are with our young adults for life. The goal would be that your mentee would be invited in to be a part of your family life: that these relationships remain a support system to them long after their time here.

Donate Winter Items (Hoodies, Blankets, Gloves) For The Homeless

Update: Small throw blankets are the item most needed right now. They can be purchased at stores such as Walmart or Academy for < $4.

The cold can be a life-or-death situation, and unfortunately, this is no exaggeration due to a few incidents a few years ago. When you are homeless you can’t carry a heavy jacket around all year so when the sudden cold comes most find themselves unprepared.

We ask that any items that would help in the winter be donated. The primary items we have in mind are small throw blankets and warm outerwear such as hoodies, coats, or jackets. Beanies, gloves, and scarves are also appreciated.

As a Wildlife Rehabilitation Volunteer, you’ll play a crucial role in their recovery and eventual release back into the wild. With proper training and approval, you may assist in handling and treating patients. Additional responsibilities include maintaining a clean and safe environment by doing laundry, sanitizing hospital and clinic surfaces, washing kennels, and ensuring outdoor flight cages are in top condition. Every task you complete directly impacts the well-being of these magnificent birds!

In order to serve our clients Hope's Door New Beginning Center provides gently used clothing and home goods donated by the community.  The excess goods and clothing are sold to the general public and the proceeds support our services and programs. Store operating hours are Monday - Saturday 10am-5pm and Sunday noon - 5pm. The McKinney Parks Foundation is a volunteer-driven nonprofit dedicated to improving park spaces, maintaining trails, planting trees and wildflowers, and enhancing public access to nature. We are also launching the East McKinney Learning Garden, where volunteers will help educate the community and address food insecurity through sustainable gardening.

Texas has the highest number of uninsured persons in the United States.

The uninsured are up to four times less likely to have a consistent source of health care as those with insurance. Without a medical home, the uninsured often receive health care in the emergency room, the most expensive and least efficient setting possible for primary care.

In McKinney, over 18,000 residents are uninsured and over 12,000 live in poverty. This leaves many without affordable access to health care.

CommonGood Medical is a primary care medical clinic for low-income, uninsured residents of Collin County.

CommonGood Medical also provides primary care, acute care, pediatrics, women's health, optometry, dermatology, cardiology, pulmonology, counseling, physical therapy, occupational therapy, prescription assistance, specialist referrals, spiritual care, and community resource referrals. CommonGood Medical does not charge a fee for its services. 

Hope's Door provides counseling services to victims of domestic violence.  Volunteers are needed Monday - Friday between the hours of 9am-5pm to assist with all aspects of the outreach services, including but not limited to those listed below. Volunteers can sign up for any two hour time period during normal business hours. New volunteers must complete the new volunteer process below.

Join us in making a real difference in the lives of our homeless neighbors by helping them overcome barriers and rebuild their lives. As a Case Aide, you'll play a crucial role in removing barriers and facilitating access to housing support programs for those in need.

Working closely with our dedicated case managers, your main tasks will involve engaging with clients, gathering essential information, and assisting in their enrollment process into a housing support program. Don't worry if you're new to this - comprehensive training will be provided to ensure you're equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to make a real difference.

To ensure we provide consistent support and maintain efficient service, we ask that case aides come at least 2 days a week and spend at least 3.5 hours per day. We are open to clients 10 am - 4 pm, Monday through Friday , except for national holidays and other specially designated dates which will be posted on our website.
