Volunteer: Adopt-A-Spots Available, Group Oriented Volunteer Work

Adopt-A-Spot

We need your help! Consider adopting a park, section of creek, green space, or road to pick up litter and help keep our community clean and healthy.

Adopt-A-Spot is a community-based program developed by Keep McKinney Beautiful and the Office

of Environmental Sustainability. It gives individuals and groups a public way to show pride in their community and help keep it litter-free.

Who can participate?

The program is free and open to all citizens. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteers who Adopt-A-Spot pledge to:

maintain their spot for one year or longer, agree to maintain the spot four times within the year, and send progress reports to the Office of Environmental Sustainability. How to get started Organize your volunteer group. Families, neighborhoods, HOAs, civic groups, Scouts, and business groups are eligible. Determine a spot to adopt. This can range from your neighborhood block to a right-of-way within the city. Be sure wherever your group adopts is age-appropriate for your party. Complete the Adopt-A-Spot: New Submission Request Once approved, schedule your tool and volunteer waiver pick-up by emailing the Office of Environmental Sustainability. Tools and completed volunteer waivers are to be returned within one week of the clean-up event. Where can be adopted? Any spot within the city limits of McKinney that is not currently being maintained may be adopted, with special attention to those places that appear neglected. A vacant lot, city medians, and right-of-ways are possible candidates. Some spots may require litter pick up to be maintained, others may require weeding and/or grass maintenance, as well as litter pick up. Our Adopt-A-Spot coordinator can help you choose a location that best suits you and your group. You can use the Trash Free Texas Interactive Map or send an inquiry with the specific location in mind.

NOTE: TxDot roadways such as 380,  75, and 5 cannot be adopted through this program.

Why Adopt-A-Spot?

Litter is the biggest source of pollution for our local waterways. Keeping our streams clean means that we live in a healthier community and enjoy a higher quality of life.

Being an Adopter gives participants an opportunity to give back to the community, teach their children about community responsibility, receive positive publicity for their business, and gain valuable community volunteer experience.

After the clean-up Submit a Wrap-Up Report after the cleanup event Email us photos and post them on your social media. Be sure to tag #KeepMcKinneyBeautiful #UniquebyNature

Adopt-A-Spot applies only to city property, however, we are willing to work with HOAs to coordinate cleanups in their communities.

Resources Before the Clean-Up During the Clean-Up Clean-Up Checklist DMWT Activity Book Not interested in adopting a spot, but still want to participate in a clean-up?

For one-time clean-up events, we have a lending system for tools. Email Green@McKinneyTexas.org for more information.

All areas within City Limits are eligible to report Wrap-Up Reports to report their community effort in Cleanups around the City.

Volunteer: Unlocking Potential: Empower Dreams Through Scholarships!

Education is a powerful tool that has the potential to transform lives, open doors to opportunities, and shape a brighter future. At the McKinney Education Foundation (MEF), we believe that every talented and determined student deserves the chance to pursue higher education, regardless of their financial circumstances.

However, the cost of college education can often be a barrier that prevents deserving students from reaching their full potential. This is where you can make a profound impact. By supporting our Scholarship program, you become a beacon of hope for ambitious young minds, helping them overcome financial obstacles and achieve their dreams.

Your contribution to scholarships enables students to:

- Aspire: Encourage aspiring scholars to dream big and set their sights on higher education, giving them the confidence to pursue fields that align with their passions.

- Excel: Provide resources for talented students to excel academically, unlocking their potential and preparing them to become future leaders, innovators, and contributors to society.

- Grow: Offer a stepping stone to personal growth and development, empowering students with knowledge and skills that will serve them for a lifetime.

- Break Barriers: Break down financial barriers that might otherwise limit a student's options, enabling them to choose their desired educational path without compromise.

Your support for scholarships not only eases the financial burden on students and their families but also fosters a community that values education and invests in the success of its young members.

Together, we can shape a world where every deserving student has the chance to pursue their educational aspirations without constraints. Your contribution isn't just about dollars; it's about changing lives and paving the way for a more educated, empowered, and equitable future.

Join us in turning dreams into reality – one scholarship at a time. Your generosity has the power to uplift individuals, families, and entire communities by investing in education. Let's work together to empower the next generation and create a legacy of positive change.

Donate to our Scholarship program today and be a catalyst for transformation in the lives of ambitious students. Your support makes dreams come true and helps build a brighter tomorrow for us all.

Empower dreams through scholarships – because every student's potential deserves to be unleashed.

Do you want to help create a more humane society for all animals? Check out our Humane Policy Volunteer Leader opportunity!

Humane Policy Volunteer Leaders are at the forefront of our work to advance priority federal, state and local animal protection policies. These efforts serve to advance humane priorities across all 435 congressional districts and thousands of state legislative districts across the nation. Please join our team! To learn more, review our Humane Policy Volunteer Leader ad here: www.humanesociety.org/policyvolunteer

Humane Policy Volunteer Leader responsibilities:

Establish and maintain effective, professional relationships with government officials and encourage their support of the HSUS’s priority animal protection positions. Actively engage in federal, state and local policy advocacy, including submitting comments to federal and state agencies on proposed animal-related regulations, as well as letters to the editor in coordination with HSUS staff. Work closely with your state director to serve as an ambassador for the HSUS by communicating our mission, approach and policies in order to foster a stronger and more visible animal protection presence in your community. Participate in HSUS-facilitated webinars or meetings. If possible, participate in and assist with your state’s Humane Lobby Day and/or local grassroots events. Develop and implement a local animal protection project, preferably working with your city council or county board of supervisors to advance an HSUS priority ordinance or resolution in your community. Encourage your networks to take action on HSUS alerts and priority policies. Recruit HSUS allies to continue expanding the diversity of our audiences, volunteers and the organization, and make the animal protection movement more inclusive for all. Humane Policy Volunteer Leaders commit to taking actions as directed by HSUS program staff and their state director, averaging one to three hours per week for one year (weekly time may vary). Ongoing participation after the first year is preferred.

Volunteer: Art Angel Orientation and Demonstration

If you love art and exchanging viewpoints over masterpieces, you will love this exceptional volunteer opportunity!

"Art Angels" visit senior living facilities and showcase artwork from fine museums while engaging residents to share their experience (e.g., thoughts and feelings) while viewing.

They conduct hour-long "Celebrating the Art Experience" at a senior community once or twice a month, in partnership with that community's Life Enrichment Director, that delight, intrigue, astonish, and comfort residents and staff alike.

Although an extensive knowledge of art or art history is not required, appreciation for such is useful.  Essential qualities of an Art Angel are good communication skills, asking questions and listening to responses.  Art Angels use art to "love on" people.

Training is required, as are your own laptop computer and HDMI cable.  A $25 expense reimbursement is available for successful presentations.  We provide tools (pointers, sound system) to facilitate a successful engagement.
