Volunteer: Create Mini-Hygiene Kit (or Donate the Items) for the Homeless

(Perfect opportunity for student, school clubs, youth groups and others needing community service  hours). For more details please contact Scott at (214) 501-6000 or email- scottmormon@gmail.com
Visit our website at www.bfinc.org

Mini-Hygiene Kits

Keeping clean can be very difficult on the streets. When a man or lady is able to keep clean, this can give them that extra bit of positivity they need to get through the day, and it can help them present themselves well for a job interview. Mini-hygiene kits are a great way to help care for the less fortunate.

Here are the ways you can help:

A) Assemble full kits
or
B) Donate whatever hygiene-related items you may have or buy. Feel free to give other items than those we have listed. We have found the ones listed are the most needed items.

Assembly

To assemble a mini-hygiene kit just put the items in a half-gallon-sized zip-lock (or off-brand) bag. If the items fit in a smaller bag that is fine too.

Example Kit:

Kit Contents:

Toothbrush
Toothpaste
Disposable Razors
Deodorant
Soap

Feel free to add more items, but avoid liquids unless sealed very well.

We are in the streets daily, so we go through bags quickly. Please know any amount helps us care for the less fortunate in our community.

To drop off mini-hygiene kits please contact Scott at 972.890.5290 or scottmormon@bfinc.org

We also invite you to come with us to the streets and watch us hand out the kits. We also do educational speaking to all ages about homelessness and drug and alcohol awareness. If interested please message or call us. Thank you, Scott.

Volunteer: Build a Monarch Waystation

Monarch butterflies and other pollinators need our help, and you can make a real impact right at home.

Join Keep McKinney Beautiful in promoting the creation of Monarch Waystations throughout McKinney. By planting native and adapted plants, residents can provide essential food, shelter, and breeding habitat for monarchs and other pollinators while contributing to a healthier, more resilient community. Monarch populations continue to face habitat loss across North America. Small actions, like a native backyard garden or container planting, add up to big change as native plants support pollinators, birds, and local ecosystems.

McKinney proudly supports monarch conservation at the leadership level as well. The Mayor of McKinney annually participates in the National Wildlife Federation’s Mayoral Monarch Pledge, reinforcing the City’s ongoing commitment to protecting pollinators and expanding habitat.

This assistance is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week with no rules or regulations as to who receives this assistance. It is the intention that when they receive food for their physical hunger, they receive generous portions of kindness and grace to feed their spiritual and emotional hunger as well.

Would you like to help out in servicing our west side pantries?

Many donations are left directly in one of our 12 pantries. This job entails visiting each of 4 food pantries and the pet pantry on the west side of McKinney and collecting donations, checking food quality, and stocking needed items.

Volunteer: USED or NEW Clothing Donations - Unhoused Neighbors - Persons Experiencing Homeless

Streetside Showers is a nonprofit organization that provides free mobile showers, hygiene kits, and clean undergarments to people experiencing homelessness in North Texas.  Streetside Showers' mission is to help restore human dignity to the homeless community. The organization's founder, Lance Olinski, was inspired to start Streetside Showers after seeing a homeless man washing out of a public restroom in McKinney, TX.
Streetside Showers parks temporary showers in strategic locations, including McKinney, Irving, and Plano. The organization also makes free showers available three to four times per week in the Dallas Metroplex.

In Mckinney an estimated 250-500 persons are experiencing homelessness. In Collin County:

19% are under 18 yrs old

14% are over 55 yrs old

Youth Homelessness increased 18%

Family Homelessness increased 15%

According to the McKinney-Vento Act, living in a car, hotel, motel, camping ground, or any place outside or not meant for human habitation is considered homelessness.

Volunteer: Washing Towels for Homeless | Pick up towels and take them home or to the laundromat to wash

How to Launder Towels

Washing towels is a commitment to come to our storage, pick up towels and take them home or to the laundromat to wash. Once they are clean, you would then fold them, put them in a white trash bag, and return them to our storage. Each pick up, you would take about 3 trash bags full of towels.

We provide laundry detergent, laundry sanitizer and white trash bags for the clean towels.

You would pick the towels up and drop them off at a storage unit in McKinney.

You can have one volunteer who does it each pick up or a group and just rotate each pick up.

We have opportunities for weekly, every other week or standby towel volunteers.

This is an off-site opportunity

Volunteer: Looking for Directors! Support your library

Do you love McKinney Public Library? Do you live in McKinney? Are you over 18 years of age? Do you have marketing/finance/auditing/fundraising/leadership skills?

If you answered yes to these questions, we need you! We meet on the fourth Tuesday every month at 6:30 p.m. at John and Judy Gay Library. The McKinney Public Library Foundation is actively recruiting for new Board Directors! You will be joining a working Board who supports your library directly.  Please see the website about the MPL Foundation at: https://www.mckinneyplf.org/mplf-applications and at MPL about the Foundation at: https://www.mckinneytexas.org/3487/McKinney-Public-Library-Foundation

You will need to attend monthly meetings and also serve on at least two committees.

We attend many of the MPL's events to raise awareness of the Foundation and we had our first big fundraising event "Sunset in the Stacks" in April 2025 that was fun and successful. What we raise goes back to the library for programming, support, technology, and more, all for the McKinney community. We participate in MPL's annual Literary Fest by supporting new authors. MPLF loves our library staff and presents at their Staff Development Day.

Show your love of the library and McKinney by serving as a Director on the McKinney Public Library Foundation Board!

Volunteer: Donate Bibles; Help Support Single Mothers, Children and Homeless

As we reach out to the community whether single mothers with children or the homeless we find they often need bibles. If you would like to donate Bibles then anything will work, but these are our recommendations:

Complete or New Testament: Bibles can be the full bible with Old + New Testament or New Testament only.

Youth & Children's Bibles: Especially needed.

Life Recovery Bible for those needing bibles in our drug and alcohol addiction program.

Easy-to-understand Translations: Translations that are easier to comprehend are preferable. While some people we meet use the King James Version many have trouble understanding it.

Language Options: We need Bibles in Spanish and others in English. You may provide either or both.

Thank you so much, you don't know how thankful people can be when the right person receives their first bible.

To drop off bibles please contact Scott at 972.890.5290 or scottmormon@bfinc.org

Donate Winter Items (Hoodies, Blankets, Gloves) For The Homeless

Update: Small throw blankets are the item most needed right now. They can be purchased at stores such as Walmart or Academy for < $4.

The cold can be a life-or-death situation, and unfortunately, this is no exaggeration due to a few incidents a few years ago. When you are homeless you can’t carry a heavy jacket around all year so when the sudden cold comes most find themselves unprepared.

We ask that any items that would help in the winter be donated. The primary items we have in mind are small throw blankets and warm outerwear such as hoodies, coats, or jackets. Beanies, gloves, and scarves are also appreciated.

Possible Items:Small Throw Blankets Hoodies Coats Jackets Beanies Gloves Scarves Thermal Underwear Even Wool Socks Size

Adult Men’s and/or Adult Women’s of Any Size

Volunteer: Help us create a teacher Zen space

Our teachers give their all each day to support and inspire our students. We want to give back by creating a calming “Zen Space” where they can recharge, reset, and take a breath during their busy day. You can help make this possible! We’ve put together a wishlist of items that will bring comfort, peace, and positivity to this space—things like cozy seating, calming décor, essential oils, and small touches of relaxation. Every item donated helps us show our teachers just how much they are appreciated.

Volunteer: Patient Advocate at a Free Healthcare Clinic | Walk alongside our patients, building relational equity

Our purpose goes far beyond providing medical care. We are called to walk alongside our patients in their journeys, offering not only support but the gift of meaningful connection. As Patient Advocates, we aim to build deep relational equity, seeing each individual as a valued soul through the compassionate eyes of Christ.

Our role is to bring the light of the Gospel into every interaction—through kind words, thoughtful actions, and unwavering love. We seek to be attentive to the Holy Spirit, listening for His guidance on how to best minister to the unique needs of every person we encounter.

This isn’t just a task—it’s a profound opportunity to make an eternal impact, to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the lives of those who need it most. Together, we shine His light in places of darkness, offering hope, healing, and dignity to every soul we serve.

------------------------------------------------------------------- CommonGood Medical exists to share the love of Jesus Christ by partnering with our community to provide quality, compassionate health care and resources to our medically underserved neighbors. -------------------------------------------------------------------

Texas has the highest number of uninsured persons in the United States.

The uninsured are up to four times less likely to have a consistent source of health care as those with insurance. Without a medical home, the uninsured often receive health care in the emergency room, the most expensive and least efficient setting possible for primary care.

In McKinney, over 18,000 residents are uninsured and over 12,000 live in poverty. This leaves many without affordable access to health care.
